Can humans fly as they do in martial arts movies?

In crouching tiger they explored the concept of flying using skills taught in martial arts. Most legends are based on facts, therefore was this something that did actually occur but died out somehow. Did they actually used to see martial arts experts "flying" and passed on the stories but had no cameras to catch the events so as the masters died out all that was left were the stories?

Internal martial arts focuses attention on chi which is the electrical currents generated by the body that move muscles and transfer thoughts. They exercise the organs that create this electricity and so can produce great power (see segals shadow man). so could it be that they could generate enough power to propel themselves into the air like this and even levetate using this energy. Most folk lore is based on some sort of fact. Or as Aqua would say "we learned to run at speed of light, and to fall down from any height". Dont believe me? Willing to put your money where your mouth is?

Reply:Yes, but you have to shove a feather duster up your azz first...
Reply:Try it out, jump off your roof using your technique. Don't forget to film it.
Reply:Can Toasters fly as they were in old windows Afterdark ? Think!
Reply:A big NO to this one, sadly!!!
Reply:Unfortunately there was never any martial ability to jump and leap to those heights .

There is some fact in that the masters did practice jumping and leaping . These were done both to avoid and to deliver attacks . Many of them probably had an amazing vertical leap , similar to that of a high jumper or NBA player . When you consider that an average vertical leap is somewhere between 8 inches and 15 inches , anything higher may start a legend .
Reply:fly plane ?yes?
Reply:there's no legend that says they can fly, that's just media creativity.and thats a fact.
Reply:as a martial artist myself I can tell that there's no such thing as "human flying" however there's this skill that can be learned called Gin Kang which gives one who masters it the capability to be able to "move lightly" (e.g jump higher)
Reply:I watched part of a show about martial arts and movies a few months ago and here is what I remember. The heroes and villains in the myths and legends were larger than life, which is what made them more spectacular than regular people. Because of this they had the power to fly and other super human abilities. The movies you see to day are a reflection of the that style. You see the heroes doing impossible things (flying, kicking 7 people before touching the ground, etc.) and the villains doing the same. The heroes and the villains need the same abilities to keep the movie interesting. I think the movie industry has really over done it. This takes away from the martial artist's true ability or hides the flaws. One of the two. A LITTLE too much "wire fu".

I don't recall anything about any masters being able to do that. It's only about giving people in the distant past something magical and superhuman to believe in.
Reply:No, just some people are good jumpers. In movies, they use wires %26amp; other special effects.
Reply:My 12 year old brother gained the ability to fly (its only for a foot or two and only a inch or so high).
Reply:Not necessarily fly but jump really high, and crouching tiger was just a really good MOVIE.
Reply:I was able too fly up %26amp; backward only one time when I was kicked in the McNuggets, Oooo Weee Oooo Weee.
Reply:Well no you cant fly but you can jump really high. One of my martial arts teacher can jump kick up to 5 feet in the air. And i seen him do it no wires or anything.
