New Hobby / Sport.?

Ok, so I am 25, a 2nd degree black belt, and I love to bowl and go to the movies. I have been thinking a lot about taking a break from martial arts to learn other things / new hobbies/sports.

So my question is this, what are some interesting cool hobbies, or sports I can learn. I thought it would be cool to make a list of things I want to learn and do a new thing each month. Social / group / sports are particularly interesting to me, and things with interest groups so I could meet new people.

Some Ideas I have had was Pool, Tennis, skating/ice skating, A different martial art ( I take taekwondo) various sports(especially ones that will further improve my balance and coordination for martial arts)

Thanks.

New Hobby / Sport.?

Reply:Rock climbing. If you find people who you can trust, it's a great group sport.
Reply:Rock climbing, scuba diving, kickboxing, and frisbee golf are fun activities. You may also try learning different weapons in your martial arts class. My mom is working on her 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do and a first degree black belt in weapons. She has a lot of fun performing katas with swords and bo.
Reply:You may work for border patrol or a minuteman helper.

It's a great team sport .... very social.

It will definitely help with your agility. Lots of quick starts/stops/changes of direction. Lots of air time. Will improve your endurance.

If Bruce Lee were alive?

If Bruce Lee were alive, what would he say to Quentin Terentino for making a movie like Kill Bill that dishonoers the martial arts, and has someone like Uma Thurman dressed up like him? Mature answers only please.

If Bruce Lee were alive?
He disgraces awesome fighters and martial arts masters like Lee.
Reply:What was wrong with the movie? How does it dishonor martial arts? It wasn't realistic, it was meant more to be artsy than realistic. I doubt Bruce would have a real problem with it.
Reply:Hiiiiii-Ya
Reply:Bruce Lee wouldn't say anything. He would kick Quentin's a**!
Reply:its just a movie dude as an actor and movie maker he may of said it was a great movie but who am i to say im not him ask him when u die :)
Reply:I dont suppose Bruce Lee would take it as seriously as you.
Reply:Some people believe Bruce Lee died due to complications after being kicked in the head during the filming of a movie in Thailand, and others claim he was assassinated with a type of Dim Mak. Believe what you want to. Bruce Lee was planning to get the role for the Kung Fu series, but David Carridine got it instead which displeased Bruce but he showed he didn't need the part. I think Bruce Lee, would show Quentin Terentino respect, and let people do what they want to. He would say, "Be like water."
Reply:Mate, get over it. Bruce Lee isn't alive, and even if he was what the hell do I care what he would think about Tarantino, or the war in Iraq, or the economy. He was just a man, not Jesus, or Buddha, or any other deity. Make up your own mind.

Long lost kung fu movie...?

There is a kung fu movie that used to be on the old "samurai sunday" back in the old days. I think it's a classic shaw brother's film. It's about 2 shaolin temples that are rivals, and there are 3 main characters that go and challenge the rival school. One learns the iron palm, the other learns the piercing finger technique, and I can't remember exactly what the third guy did, but it was probably acrobatics or weapon techniques. I want to track this movie down. does it sound familiar to any of you martial arts fans out there?

Long lost kung fu movie...?
I can only think of Invincible Shaolin. The story pits Northern shaolin teachers against Southern shaolin teachers of the manchu army. A manchu general (Wang Lung Wei) schemes to have his coaches challenged by rival northern shaolin teachers. The nothern and southern shaolin masters learn of the plot way too late.
Reply:I'm not a martial arts fan, but your question intrigued me enough to look up info on the Shaw Brothers. I have linked an article at Wiki which lists many of their movies along with pics of the actors. I'm hoping it will help you locate the one you want.

Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia)?

Man this movie looks awesome. As a huge fan of the old B-grade kung fu movies and Jet Li, I am eagerly waiting for the release of his final martial arts epic on the 20th. For all you kung fu movie fans, what was your favorite kung fu flick of all time?

Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia)?
I have a few...the epics first...

Bride with White Hair (aka) Bai fa mo nu zhuan

-starring Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Lin

Swordsmen 2 (aka) Xiao ao jiang hu zhi dong fang bu bai

-starring Jet Li and Brigitte Lin

Fighter in the Wind (aka) Barumi Fighter

-starring Dong-kun Yang

and all the Bruce Lee films...

BY the way....Fearless....was superb....excellent. Jet's best movie on all levels. Peace.
Reply:The movie that actually got me started in Martial Arts films was "The Matrix." But some of my faverite traditional kung fu movies that I like include, "Dagger 8, Hero, Kung Fu Hustle, and The Medalion."
Reply:I'm not a big fan of kung fu movies, but I if I had to pick one, it would be "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106770/ ), not only because it is a true story but also because the fight scenes serve to *enhance* the story as opposed to *being* the story. (I find many kung fu movies similar to pornos in that they have no real plot; they're just a series of fight [or sex] scenes one after the other.) Also, the fighting in "Dragon..." is done at a moderate pace, which I prefer to the frenetic pace of some of the Chow-Yun Fat and Jet Li movies I've seen. It's hard for me to watch fight scenes when hands and feet become a blur.

I also like the "The Karate Kid" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087538/ ) and "Best of the Best" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096913/ ) ... Do they count?

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the show that used to be on Sunday or Thursday night?

He was divorced and she was also or was single and they started to date and her sister worked in a book store - what is the name of the actress that played the part. He also starred in a movie where Halle Berry took martial art lessons to finally kill him - what is his name and the name of the actress that he starred in this show with?

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the show that used to be on Sunday or Thursday night?
Are you thinking about Laura Linney and Bill Campbell in Tales of The City?

Bill Campbell also played the wife-beating husband in "Enough". However, his wife that later takes martial art lessons and kills him was played by Jennifer Lopez, not Halle Berry.

Help deciding on a hobby?

I'm taking up a hobby in the near future, and I can't decide between the following:

Martial Arts (I've watched too many Chuck Norris movies)

Dance (I've wanted to know how to dance since I was a kid and saw Grease)

Music (I've always got catchy little tunes running through my head, just not sure how to get them out...)

Running (I already do light jogging and weightlifting, I'm talking about hardcore, organized running)

So, which would you reccommend and why?

Help deciding on a hobby?
Music, get those catchy tunes out of your head.

Running, it's cheaper than martial arts and he who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.

What should I get my boyfriend for valentines?

We've been dating 5 1/2 months now. I got some chocolate, and I am maybe going to give him a picture of me, because he's asked for one before. Anyway, I don't want to get him just that. I want to give him something else too, but I don't know what. Here's a little about him if it gives any ideas. K, so he is a real quiet type, doesn't like a whole lot of people. He likes watching movies, likes family guy, and loves martial arts and stuff like that (He's taken lots of classes and stuff for it). Um, he likes candy, but not a whole lot, and I already got him some of that. I don't know if any of that helps, but if you have any ideas, that'd be great (btw, we're 17)

What should I get my boyfriend for valentines?
Get him a movie and spend the night on the couch watching it with him.
Reply:maybe make a "coupon for a movie night" and you can treat him to a movie? don't do to much since ya'll havent been dating that long.
Reply:most guys dont care about valentines so im sure wut ever u get him he'll be happy

What Movie Is This?

I remember a few years back there was at least one movie with a really fat cop who was a martial arts expert. Can anyone remember one of these movies or the guy's name?

What Movie Is This?
Sammo Hung sounds like the guy.
Reply:Sammo Well Hung
Reply:That sounds like the series 'Martial Law'....did they make a feature film to start the series i wonder?
Reply:Are you talking about Beverly Hills Ninja starring Chris Farley?
Reply:It's called Any film Steven Seagals in
Reply:...as with several other answerers, I am inclined to peg Asian actor Sammo Hung, as the actor you are looking for.

One of the last films I recall Sammo starring in (during one of my last Naval Submarine port-of-call stops in Hong Kong), where he plays a cop, is the Hong Kong actioner "Don't Give a Damn", from 1995, and released here in the States as "BURGER COP"; in the film, Sammo's cop character is one of three police investigators, on the trail of ruthless drug dealers.

Also starring dynamic Asian action star, Yuen Biao, "Burger Cop" was originally supposed to be a film that reunites Sammo, Yuen and Jackie Chan, who had not worked together since the comedy/actioner "Dragons Forever" (1989); however due to Jackie's shooting schedule on other films, the reunion regrettably didn't happen.

Do you really think aikido works on real fight??

have you ever see on streets ppl fight like how the aikido fight?looks nice and very grace...but it doesnt work.this is real world..i go for experience street fighters its only for movies, culture and art ive never came across anyone using pressure point or armlock to subdue opponent...unless police officers with back up...if you believe to much in martial art baloney.you end up dead using aikido in gangfight...learning alone is not enough unless you experience in a real no holds barred fight its like learning swimming in a classroom..

Do you really think aikido works on real fight??
I do agree with your point that learning the principles of swimming in a classroom ain't the same as jumping in the pool. However, you're question seems to be based on several misunderstandings about Aikido and about practical use of the "soft" martial arts.

First, you are right in that many of the demo/movie choreography styles that instructors teach are completely useless in a street brawl. Some of them have never even been close to a real fight with an uncooperative, aggressive opponent. However, there is an element to Aikido that many either are ignorant about or ignore. "70 % of Aikido is atemi" (Gozo Shioda - Yoshinkan Aikido). No, a joint manipulation or throw as usually practiced in the dojo won't work in "sparring". Your friend's experience with you wasn't the result of an ineffective style, it was in his application and in your fore-knowledge of the strategy he would most-likely employ. Had it been a real fight with a stranger and he popped you square in the nose before applying an armlock, you might have had a different experience.

Second, you're taking "sparring" as a measure of street effectiveness. There are some nasty SOB's in MMA or UFC that I would never get into the ring with to spar or compete against. But if we're talking in a back-alley brawl and I've got a knife (he doesn't know I've got), submission wrestling is likely to get him hurt.

Third, you're assuming the only practical application is in an all out street brawl. Picture this scenario. You're at a family gathering and that obnoxious brother-in-law has had too much to drink. He decides to get a macho on and starts taking a poke at you for some imagined disrepect you've done to him. You can't just beat the tar out of him. However, a well placed armlock or a simple throw as he takes a swing at you defends you and doesn't make you look like an *** for just putting a serious hurt on him.
Reply:I have been reading a lot of these type of threads recently and i have noticed a general trend to forget about the fact that Aikido is for life not for fighting! Report It

Reply:Besides i have always been taught (Ki Aikido) that the best technique is to avid confrontation in the first place! Instead of suggesting how easy it would be to control someone with an arm lock why not consider offering to buy them a drink! Report It

Reply:Look into Kenpo! Its street fighting!
Reply:That's exactly what I've been trying to tell people. They don't need to do nhb (no hold barred) to be able to defend themselve. However they does need to at do realistic full contact sparring or grappling of some sort, even wrestling or boxing lone will help ten folds.

I disagree about armlock or other locks. It actually work very well if you apply it right because most person would rather to stop instead of go home with a broken bone. Also if their bone got break they're really in bad situtation. but you need to know what you're doing to make it work.
Reply:While I don't practice Aikido, I know it to be a good art %26amp; I respect the art %26amp; those who practice it. You should do the same. You have much to learn, grasshopper.
Reply:I have used Aikido techniques in self-defense situations and found them to be quite effective...While pressure points in a streetfight are not always going to be able to be applied, joint locks and the like are more than usable, even against multiple opponents. The techniques have saved my life on more than one occasion, and will probably do so again when the need arises.
Reply:wankstar73, your name says it all really...

anyways... you would be hard pressed to find an Aikido practitioner getting involved in a gang fight, as she or he would have a job, an education, and be in bed at that time.

I do not recommend it for street fighting, but to each their own. I prefer harder techniques and violence, in combating violence. fighting fire with napalm is the way to go.
Reply:just as Kveldorgondlier said in a previous posting : "How you train, is how you fight."

Aikido techniques CAN work in any situation, but it's all in how you use them, and you gotta know how to apply it and how quickly to apply it. again it's NOT the discipline that is faulty, it's the individual who learned it and how well they can apply the techniques they've learned.

of course someone on the street isn't gonna attack/fight you in the same way as another student will in practice during class, but that's why you train; so that the technique is there in the back of your mind and you can use it if you need it.

and actual experience is good also, I had a classmate defend himself and his mom using a simple Hapkido technique, and he broke the guy's arm, it was all on tape from the cameras outside the store. when the cops pulled up, he had the guy in an arm lock to keep him from gettin away.

So you don't need anything fancy, you just need to know how to do it without having to think about it, and spend your training time wisely. you also said that your friend was trying out a technique, it was probl'y new to him an he hadn't learned how to use it quickly or properly yet (as Shaman said, good pointer dude).

and I also have to agree with Ninedemonsgod (mark your calenders folks, lol just kidding) it doesn't have to be a no holds barred fight, because in the street, you do what you gotta do to survive the encounter. or in the case of a outing with friends or family and somethin' gets out of hand, you'll know what to do without seriously hurting them, on the street, who cares? he attacked you.

And someone who learned Martial Arts will 9 times out of 10 be more likely not to get in to a "gang fight" by themselves, even with their techniques, it would be very difficult to fight four or more alone.

Also Shaman made a good point that you guys were just "sparring" so you guys aren't gonna try to really hurt each other or you wouldn't be friends in the first place (and he shouldn't've tried to use a technique on you since you're not in the class and prob'ly didn't know how to perform a break fall), because someone on the street probl'y has it on their mind to kill you.

PEOPLE IN Belgium/Antwerp , HELP ME!!! i'm looking for "stunt" school?

i am looking for an acadamy in antwerp Belgium , for movies or stuntmen ...

PEOPLE IN Belgium/Antwerp , HELP ME!!! i'm looking for "stunt" school?
Sorry, I don't know here in Antwerp.

Best you go first a practice in a circus, that's the best base you can get like Simon did.

Ask Sarah Donahue, she's on myspace and she's the best stunt woman of the world.

Bruce Lee never did any flashy techniques and acrobatics, did he even know how?

In all his movies, all the moves were furious clean techniques but there was none of this Summer saults, backflips, kip-ups, or flashy spin kicks like you see in today's Jet Li martial arts films, or other Chinese movies today.

Was Bruce Lee intentionally only showing things that could work in reality, or did he not know how to do any flashy acrobatic moves?

Bruce Lee never did any flashy techniques and acrobatics, did he even know how?
Bruec was serious and showed many moves that would work, he also believed that flashy moves were just that and you could easily loose balance and expose yourself to your opponent. He also thought that a kick higher than the waist was only asking for trouble by loosing your center of balance. He could though from a standing croutch jump up 8 ft. so I think he could have done these types of acrobats but they were not his style. He created Jeet Keen Do, then the art of intercepting fist then he regarded to the fact that the best style of fighting was no style but to be as water ready to conform to do whatever was neccessary to win a fight.
Reply:He was natural and unadulterated.
Reply:Well I think Bruce Lee was the best ever in martial arts techniques, Jet Lee, Jackie Chan etc are just copykats and yes I think he knew how its just that it was another time and period.
Reply:Read a bio. He didn't make a mystery of what he did. Some are funny anecdotes. Like him and the high kick and Chuck Norris. Films are meant to be looked at. So he gave the public what he knew it would go ape for.

Interestingly, there's a corellary: World War One fighter aces. The very best avoided fancy aerobatics. It came down to shooting well, and personal courage.

Did he know how? There isn't ever going to be anybody that good at that kind of thing again. It's that obvious, and everybody knows it.
Reply:He did know some of the basic "flashy" moves, but chose to keep things simple once he developed his own fighting style. Jet Li and Jackie Chan were in other activities (gymnastics, circus, etc), which helped them learn how to do choreographed fights with more flourish. Bruce didn't have the same kind of background and training.
Reply:Bruce Lee never trained in long fist (the acrobatic wushu you see Jet Li and Jackie Chan doing). He was more interested in making a fight look good but realistic.

If you watch a choreographed fight in a Jet Li film, you'll notice that there's little to no confusion between the fighters. That's not because they're trained better, it's because you'll never see that in real life. Even between competing gongfu masters, you'll at some point see nothing but a blur of arms and legs. Bruce Lee didn't see the point in studying long fist; that was why he created Jeet Kune Do.
Reply:well, he had always said the he never wanted to do any of that stuff. i saw in an T.V. special about Kung-fu that said that when he was asked to do a fight scene, the director would get angry, calling him "three kicks bruce" cause he would only do the same 3 kicks on everybody. when he was asked about it, he simply said "why should i do anything else? i know that when i kick them, that they won't be getting up again."

anyway, bruce lee was straight to the point. he based it on how he would really fight. He wanted to truly express himself on film, not do some flashy moves that don't represent him at all.
Reply:bruce lee was trying to make his movies more realistic than a chop socky flick.
Reply:Regardless to whether he did or not Bruce Lee was the best theire ever was and ever will be in martial arts techniques. No one even to today can come close.
Reply:Bruce Lee could have easily done any of those flashy acrobatic moves, but he wanted to portray the Martial Arts as they should be, not over-hype them just for show.
Reply:my friend, Bruce Lee did no acrobatics. In the beginning of Enter the Dragon he performed a double back flip and did so by jumping over two of his fellow combattents I think if he were alive today with the belives he had he would not use special effects and trick wire to inhanse his fighiting . I am a big Bruce Lee fanatic (not fan) fanatic. So I guess you could say he showed us things that could work in reality.
Reply:Bruce Lee had different stages in his training. He tried to portray that in his films during his short career. Later on when he was researching different systems and came up with a name for it Jeet Kune Do, he emphasized more in simplicity. This was for his own research. Later students that studied/trained with him had to find their own "path". What you would see in any of his movies that if he did any type of flips, etc. was for show (beginning of Enter the Dragon). But most of the techniques he showed in his film was trying to show us that simplicity works. He was trying to show another side of film-making other than the traditional "flying and kicking" Chinese movies during that time era. If you read any of his books, you can see that he emphasizes simplicity and "economy of movement" more and more and time goes by. This all, of course roots from his Wing Chun training and progressed as he was doing his research before his tragic death. Rest In Peace...Bruce and Brandon Lee.
Reply:It's really quite simple, he knew b.s. didn't fly and had the right principles in mind when it came to his films. Why make fake acrobatic stuff filmed, when he knew it wasn't practical?

The man was a real martial artist, not a circus performer.
Reply:the acrobatic stuff is only for the movies.that is why i only like a few of the martial art movies of today(fearless is great)but how often can you show a side kick before everyone gets bored .remember they make movies for the money also.lets face it unless your opponent is already unconscious you are not going to be able to fly 30 feet across the room and kick him 20 times before he knew what hit him.when Bruce lee came out this thing we call martial arts was new to us.it was far from the bare knuckle western saloon fights so Bruce did not need all the c.g.or cables to entertain the fans.i could go on but i think you get the point

Jet Li's new movie?

Why is Jet Li's new movie, "Fearless", his last martial arts epic?

Jet Li's new movie?
No, he'll be doing more martial arts movies. His upcoming movie Rogue - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499556/ - is currently in production.
Reply:it isn't, he will be doing more, ive heard that he is actually working on something now
Reply:Never. He won't ever retire.

What do i do if?

what do i do if a girl i like is in my martial arts class and everytime we talk she would always smile and laugh. (topics are mostly school, martial arts, food, travel, and movies) I even noticed that everytime when I talked to her, she would always be holding/hugging something or having her hands pinned to something. I believe that she is trying not to play with her hair. But I'm very bad at judgment. Although we dont see each other very much, for some reason I still like her and I dont know if its the way back too. We've also been friends ever since we went to a tournament together along with the martial arts team. But I am also shy if you guys answer to ask her out. So what do I do? Note: I am very confused about this. Any guidence?

What do i do if?
shyness is a major problem of mine too. give it a shot. martial arts should teach you self confidence. complement her technique or kata. next time a martial art movie comes out tell her how excited you are to see it. ask her if she wants to see it also. you could also try to get a group to go so its not really a date, but you get to interact with her on a more social level.
Reply:write a note.
Reply:just pretend she's your bff and you want to hang out with her.
Reply:You should ask her out on a date. I understand that you are shy, but being shy could make you miss out on a good woman.
Reply:well it is like so obvious that she likes you. you should seriously tell her and I bet you anything that she feels the same way.
Reply:give a call
Reply:Pick up the phone.
Reply:well I would say to give it a shot ask her if she would like to go coffee or just a drink and i think when it came to judgement u did an okay job.
Reply:well if you really like her then youll be brave enough to tell her the truth! and if she dont like you back then you deserve better!

-Kay
Reply:aww....sweet. ask her out like a guy.
Reply:just take her personnel number and call her somewhere alone and tell ur internal feelings to her if she is interested she will say yes otherwise she will try to make u as a friend.
Reply:Get her phone number and call her. Or get her email and talk with her on MSN Messenger. That's the easiest way to get to know a girl without the nervousness/awkwardness of a face-to-face conversation...
Reply:take it from me if your in love to her tell her about it.

cause if you don't you will end up just like me with full of regrets.. and worst she might ended up with just some bad ***,playboy guys out there and we all know that there are alot of goons out there....
Reply:you should ask her out in a casual way.no big deal.brush out your shyness.what possibly can go wrong.seems like she is doing all the girly things that speak to you.obviously she is never going to ask you out ,simply that's not the way it works.just be yourself,be naturally spontaneous,avoid formulas,she is reading you back,and she likes you...you know that.try something like;

"hey,(name) would you like to go out (walk'n thepark, coffee,)

Movie-ish question?

ok so we watch these movies and we train martial arts right. some of the movies we watch are fighting heavy (they fight for any reason) other movies people may scream or cry but no one fights back when their life is endangered (ie. horror movies). how do you think the real life fight might break out? wouldn't you like to see the slasher guy sneak aroung the courner just to be kicked in the sack. i would love to see someone produce a movie that involve more realistic "action" scenes with people acting like people i know.

Movie-ish question?
It appears that in alot of those movies everyone is scared out of their wits and incapable of defending themselves. I personally, having practiced martial arts for some years now, am perfectly able to bust some serial killer's butt with a rolled up newspaper.
Reply:.....scenes with people acting like people you know?

You'd be surprised how they would act when confronted with a group of killer ninja wizards.
Reply:I love seeing the slasher totally annihilate his victims. I think it is sexy.
Reply:True, no one really does all the dancing around stuff that you see in some of these movies, although I was really impressed with the fight scenes in the Transporter and Transporter 2. A little more realistic.

Some facts i've learnt from watching movies - do you like?

Hollywood Lessons:

1. It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts: your enemies will wait patiently to attack you one by one, dancing around in a threatening manner until you have knocked out their predecessors.

2. Honest and hard-working policemen are traditionally gunned down three days before their retirement.

3. All beds have special L-shaped sheets that reach the armpit level of a woman, but only the waist level of the man lying beside her.

4. At least one of a pair of identical twins is born evil.

5. Most laptop computers are powerful enough to override the communications system of any invading alien society.

6. All grocery bags contain at least one stick of French bread.

7. Rather than wasting bullets, megalomaniacs prefer to kill their arch enemies using complicated machinery involving fuses, pulley systems, deadly gasses, lasers, and man-eating sharks, which will allow their captives at least a half-hour to escape.

8. You're very likely to survive any battle in any war unless you make the mistake of showing someone a picture of your sweetheart back home.

9. A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating, but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds.

10. If a large pane of glass is visible, someone will be thrown through it before long.

11. If staying in a haunted house, women should investigate any strange noises in their most revealing underwear.

12. Even when driving down a perfectly straight road, it is necessary to turn the steering wheel vigorously from left to right every few moments.

13. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they're going to go off, but luckily you'll always blindly choose to cut the right wire.

i personally think house of flying daggers is better due to the martial arts.

Haven't seen HoFD, but the Harry Potter movies have all been quite disappointing. I will look for HoFD on this recommendation because you're right about Harry. Best book series ever -- real mediocre movies.

If Bruce Lee were still alive, what impact would he have had......?

in today's movies or martial arts, or even to society. He was one of my hero's when I was growing up, and wished he never died.

If Bruce Lee were still alive, what impact would he have had......?
Bruce Lee was an amazing man. They used to say he was the most fit man in the world. He was in better shape physically than anybody at that time. I see questions asked on here who would win in a fight. Bruce Lee or Jet Li or some other well know person. The answer is, "no contest". Bruce was so far beyond everybody else. He could beat any fighter just with his mind alone. He could out think any fighter and beat them to the punch. It's ashame some people die so young.

.
Reply:He would have continued to make martial arts movies and his reputation would have thrived.

I would imagine that although bruce lee's actual skill level is questionable because there is no fight record and the only video we have of him sparring that I've ever seen (and a lot of people) is this one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aky-PLIEBQA

(I can guess he is the one in all black)

One thing that is doccumented is that bruce lee did advocate full contact sparring (with all targets) at a time in the martial arts when that was not too common so even if his skill wasn't as good, he would have been exposed and I would imagine have gone back and trained to get better, not make up excuses.

I think eventually he would have developed himself to incorporate groundfighting for the purposes of training his students in what has come a reality with the popularity of bjj and MMA. He himself would likely not be able to spar or do anything full contact today as he would have been in his 60s and might have had health problems. We would have seen if he was good because of his physical ability, or because of his technique as he got older and his speed faded with age. Whether he would have been able to cover this with experience is a high probability.

One thing is for certain there is no way in hell bruce would have kicked *** in the UFC or pride because of his age when they became popular. IF he did compete it would have been in the early UFCs and would likely not have developed any groundgame to defend against submissions or takedowns and the gracies would have still dominated. Either way he would have been WAY over the hill already to have competed because he would be around 50 or so, way older than anyone and he would lack the physical ability to be a presence in the UFC. Likely he would have been a sought after coach and had a role, but not as a fighter.

Bruce lee also mimicked muhammad ali to learn from him, he admits muhammad ali would have kicked his *** in a fight.

I doubt he would have been as popular once other ma actors came out if he were still alive also as I believe much of his image is based on his death and linda lee shamelessly trying to cash in on her late husband's image.

Do Hollywood movies and TV stereotypically emphasize women's strength only through sexuality?

When you see so-called "strong" female lead characters in Hollywood movies and TV shows, doesn't it seem like it's almost always through their sexuality?

Even when a woman is depicted as being intelligent, quick-thinking, or having some sort of special skill (e.g. martial arts), in the end it always has to tie into her looks or ability to influence men?

Would you like to see more lead female roles where the sexuality aspect is downplayed or non-existent in favor of highlighting other strengths?

Do Hollywood movies and TV stereotypically emphasize women's strength only through sexuality?
No. Then you would lose the hetero male audience.

Is it illegal to walk around with a sword in CA?

if some one walked around with a sword on them can they get arrested or have to pay a fine in CA? just a random question, watchen to much martial arts movies.

Is it illegal to walk around with a sword in CA?
Don't you love people who answer questions with no citation to any authority and who clearly do not know what they are talking about? (I am obviously not talking about you, Superman!)

There are no state laws generally prohibiting the open carrying of knives, other than switchblades, in California. There are some place prohibitions (e.g., public buildings, schools, etc.). A sword would come within California's definition of a "dirk or dagger," and thus could not be carried concealed on the person (assuming you could find someplace on your person to hide a sword). A knife openly carried in a sheath is not concealed, and I would expect that a sword's scabbard would qualify as a sheath.

Note that this is State law. There may be some applicable local city or county regulations.
Reply:John S already answered this question better than I could the last time it was asked. http://answers.yahoo.com/quest...

Reply:It's illegal to phart in CA... much less carry a sword.
Reply:yer of couse the police could think you want to hurt someone with it
Reply:Why the sword, for cutting vegetabels for salad ?
Reply:yes. any blades that are not foldable (i.e. pocket knifes) are illegal to carry around without a special permit. switch blades are illegal too, even tho they fold (kinda)
Reply:well i tried to look it up for u but all i got was its ok in anahiem but id call the police station and ask them they will let u know i say as long as it isnt concealed and it has a sheath on it and your not waving it around like a mad man it should be ok but id get advice from police before doing it..
Reply:Yes it is, and pretty much in every state as well. If you keep it in a sword case and put in a sword carrying bag, then that's okay.
Reply:An interesting question. There is a group of Chinese men that do Ti Chi (is that right) with full size swords at the Lake Merritt BART Station in Oakland every morning. Might be you are OK up to the point you threaten someone with the weapon. Not much different than a baseball bat. Perceived intent would be an issue to.
Reply:John does it again!

Here's what I know.

It is not a concealed weapon, it is not a "ready use" weapon. Swords, both western and eastern, do fall under dirks and hunting knives (Weird, huh?), as well as exercise equiptment as per CA state regulations. My experience is with katana, so I will share what I know.

To have the sword on your person is perfectly legal. One can walk around with it in their belt, one can walk around while holding it by the saya (scabbard), one can walk around with it in a sword bag...if one is a martial artist. I've walked to the dojo many times with my iaito and shinken with me...no problems whatsoever. I was stopped once by an officer in a parking lot, but only because he liked swords too and wanted a look. Lol. Dirks and daggers are fine as they are, since people can use them for things like camping, but swords? A sword, as it is made, can only be seen as either a weapon or a training tool.

The problem truly arises with the possible intent to cause bodily harm or defacing someone's property. To hold a sword by the sheath, it is at rest and "harmless". Same with having it in the sword bag, as it is not easily accessible. Touch the handle, and you are brandishing a deadly weapon.

Hope this helps.

Postscript: I do not condone any such actions, nor do I condone the use of any martial arts equiptment without seeking legitimate instruction in their use. In fact, I advise against the above discussed actions, even if martial training is had.

Cant remember the name of this movie plz help!!?

i seen this movie a while back and i cant remember what it is called, all i remember is that its a martial arts movie and in the begining of the movie this lady goes and find these little girls who could fight really well and tricks them into coming with her by offering them candy and stuff like that , then she takes them to like this place that is like a boot camp with alot of guards and then she basically train them to get better and they grow up at that place and i remember a part where she have them all fight each other until death and the last one standing is the one that lives and works for her but instead of one person theres going to be three and two of the girls that survive was best friends

Cant remember the name of this movie plz help!!?
i'm not sure.. but is this Naked Weapon?..
Reply:That would be Naked Weapon. I have it on DVD..

Who's going to win? tall vs. short?

6 ft 2 in 205 lbs(no fight training but saw many martial arts movies) VS. 5 ft 3 in 145 lbs black belt in couple of martial arts?

With no weapon, who's going to win? They are both mad as hell at eachother. They cannot settle because of their pride.

Who's going to win? tall vs. short?
It's going to be an even match. short dude might have all the training, the big dude is like twice as big. he can just try to sqaush the short dude. but with martial arts training, he has some moves on his sleeves. definite even match!
Reply:big guy would win based on the facts you provided.
Reply:the 5'3 with the black belt is going to take down the 6'2 guy . when it all comes down, its not the size that will win.
Reply:Depends on who's a better fighter, Logic says someone with any training is better prepared than someone with none, watching other people do it does not make you good, it's in the doing.

If the fighter is any good the height advantage can be used against you. Based on physics alone the short guy will be faster and if the big guy doesn't use his range effectively he could be in big trouble.
Reply:tall
Reply:Tall, but only 'cause I'm biased.
Reply:Short guy definitely
Reply:If there are no rules then I would take the black belt guy since he will be trained and prepared to do anything in order to survive. You can say whatever, but there is nothing like experience when throwing fisticuffs. Take a boxer like Rick Hatton or Floyd Mayweather, they both weigh about 145lbs. they would have no trouble at destroying 99% of all guys bigger then them.
Reply:Tall. I know lots of short guys who say they know some kind of martial arts, but when I challenge them to show me up close and personal, they back off.

For Jackie Chan Movie Fans, and/or Fans of the Music of Tangerine Dream!!!?

I've asked this before, months ago; didn't get a good answer for it, so I thought I'd try it again. As many old-school martial arts movie fans know, the background music for these films, is a lot of times, sampled from popular U.S. films; I've heard familiar themes in these chop socky flicks, from stateside films, like "Rocky", "Carrie", "Superman", and several others...

In Jackie Chan's 1978 action/comedy "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", 1 of the familiar themes in the film, is from Mel Brook's film, "Silent Movie"; however, in another part of the film, where Jackie's character goes out in an empty courtyard, and finds chalk-mark footsteps, laid out in sequence, by an old martial arts master, trying to teach Jackie his style of kung fu, the background music, showing Jackie working out the footsteps, is definitely a familair piece of music by the synthesizer progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream...

...would anyone be able to tell me what the name of that piece of music is???

For Jackie Chan Movie Fans, and/or Fans of the Music of Tangerine Dream!!!?
...glad you were able to finally find out what that musical composition was; in fact, you're absolutely right, about the movie music samplings used in those old kung fu flicks. Every once in a while, while watching them, I get that distinct sense of de-ja-vu, like 'where have I heard that music before?'...

...anyways, there's nothing like the one-two punch of Jackie Chan's 1978 chop socky action comedy, "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", and it's co-companion film, the first "Drunken Master", not only for the initiation of what would soon be Jackie Chan's trademark slapstick martial arts action/comedy style, but also for the breath-taking, eye-opening, jaw-dropping and outstandingly choreorgraphed, almost ballet-like martial arts action and stunt work...a fine tribute to the early work of martial arts director/choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping, who would much later, be called upon for something much more substantially high-profile, namely the Warshaski brothers, and their "Matrix" trilogy...

Can anyone out there identify this movie?

Hi,

Can anyone out there identify this movie?

It is a late 1970s MArtial Arts movie set as a western which may have starred

Lee Van cleef but not

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0071784

It involved a great deal of swordplay with US Calvalry or similarly attired badies with sword fighting, and a certain amount of martial arts. From the description of the

above Lee Van cleef movie, I feel that it may not be this movie but I'm not certain that it doesn't correspond to this one.

Any ideas? Definitely a 1970s (1980!, 1981, no later!) movie

Can anyone out there identify this movie?
That's Rebels with Big Swords..

Can anyone recommend a good foreign movie?

Preferably subtitled instead of dubbed if it wasn't filmed in English.

Here are some I've tried and liked:

Im Juli

Run Lola Run

a lot of martial arts movies

Grave of the Fireflies

Snatch

I'm open to any genre except sappy romance. Like, some romance is okay as long as there are other elements to it.

That's just a few in case it helps.

Can anyone recommend a good foreign movie?
I like "Amelie," which isn't really a romance, but does have a romance element in it.

You should also check out the Japanese version of "Shall We Dance?" which provides a context for the storyline through the Japanese culture, and is hilariously funny as a result - way better than the stoopid Hollywood remake.

"Like Water for Chocolate" is another brilliant foreign film. An element of Romance, but definitely tasteful and in the realm of Art House - not sappy romance!

"Red Sorghum" has some of the most amazing cinematography I've ever seen.

"Yellow Earth" is another one I'll never forget.

Wasabi - Action. Also French, starring Jean Reneau as a French cop who travels to Japan to take custody of a daughter he never knew he had until her mother died. Ninja movie fans, can you remember one from the '80's, maybe '70's, starring white American ninjitsu called

Richard Chamberlain or similar (not that Richard Chamberlain); clean shaven, fair hair, in loads of martial arts movies...

movie set in the Orient, theme music is same as that of Miami Vice, with an additional upward beat on the end! same type of movie as those of Bruce Lee, Jim Kelly, Chuck Norris from that period.

Ninja movie fans, can you remember one from the '80's, maybe '70's, starring white American ninjitsu called
Are you talking about Shogun with Richard Chamberlain? Or Enter The Ninja? Enter The Ninja had a white ninja but wasn't Richard. That was the movie that started it all for me. Led me to search for real ninjutsu. I still watch the old movies even though they are totally inaccurate, lol. Good entertainment as long as you don't believe them. I loved Revenge Of The Ninja and the TV series The Master with Lee Van Cleef and Sho Kosugi.
Reply:I think you may mean Beverly Hills ninja
Reply:Hi there

I think you're thinking of Enter the Ninja starring Franco Nero and Susan George. But the real Star was Sho Kosugi. He was responsible for the ninja boom in the 80's. You may remember him from the Master TV show. The funny thing is he never did ninjutsu. He was an Okinawan Kobudo and Karate master. Many fond childhood memories of those movies although they are terrible to watch now. If you check out amazon you can buy them on DVD. I would recommend revenge of the ninja the sequel as well.

Check out Mad Mission 2 its very funny.

Best wishes

What is kemogori?is it a real practice in martial arts?

They talk about it in the movie Elektra.

What is kemogori?is it a real practice in martial arts?
Its crap from a movie you watched... bring back the dead my ****! Don't belive everything you see in movies kid... its fake.
Reply:Kemogori is the art of moving Chi. It can be used to do many things, including raising the dead.

Does it exist? Probably so. I have not seen or heard any name using this. However there are many practices in the more advances forms of Tai Chi that may be related to this.
Reply:It is a fake style that pretends to use chi to do amazing things

Does anyone have any great links to Martial Arts weapons websites?

I'm a collector and I recently noted the arm guards seen in the Movie Batman Begins. They were hard plates with crooked metal knives along the side. I need to know where I can purchase Arm Guards like these, or at least ones very similar without knives. can anyone help me?

Does anyone have any great links to Martial Arts weapons websites?

So many people sincerely interested in MA on Yahoo Answers-Martial Arts ask which style is best?

And this is pretty natural, as popular Kung Fu movies often pit one style (or School of Thought) against another to prove which is better. (Like Crane against Tiger Claw)

Perhaps a better question might be, how do you tell if the sensei at a dojo is any good.

Or perhaps you too believe style is more important than the individual dojo.

* Is School more important than Teacher, or Sensei more important than Style?

If "Teacher" is more important, what qualities do you look for? If "School" is more important, what style is best?

So many people sincerely interested in MA on Yahoo Answers-Martial Arts ask which style is best?
When I first got on here, all I read was that Muay Thai was everything and TKD was crap... so honestly, being a TKD guy, I went looking for a Muay Thai school..... What I found was something different that what I was used to (no better or worse, but added together very strong), and a very well spoken, knowlegable instructor that I look forward to learning from for the next few years at least... The reason I respect him most, is he will not say what I did was wrong or bad, but this is how it is done in Muay Thai and this is why.... Whether I agree with everything he says or not is irrelevant, and I do my best to do as he says.... On sparring days, when I am trying to do what I have been taught by him, (Im not quite there yet to really make it work) when I get in trouble and go back to what is natural for me (to save my face some pain haha) he never talks down or corrects me, but the next few classes it seems he works drills that will help me "convert" so to speak.... What I am really learning about the 2 different arts is when and where each one will work best and it will ultimately be a blend for me.... So I'd say to anyone (who gets on yahoo answers and asks which art is better at fighting) find a good instructor, learn as much as you can about any style and stop living in fantasy land about being Bruce Lee
Reply:I believe that it is the teacher that is the most important element.

Unfortunately when you are an absolute beginner it is impossible to tell if the teacher is any good and so most people base their assessment on the nicest looking school with the best ad in the Yellow Pages and the most students especially at a blackbelt level, or even more likely in most cases just on the first school that they go into.
Reply:Learning from someone you respect is most important for me. Someone who prioritizes safety and the values I want to hone from studying the art. I study Ninpo because of its focus on spirituality and tradition. Check out http://www.ninjaseishin.com for more info about this special art. I have an interest in and a respect for all forms of MA.
Reply:I would prefer to say that each individual has their own focus as to which would be more suitable for them. Personally, I think both are just as important. If you don't like a particular school, then it would be pointless for you to join it because you would not put your heart into learning it. Although you might be intrigued by a particlar school but the teacher is not able to live up to your expectation, you would not truly learn the proper stuffs in the martial arts.
Reply:Teacher, he or she will affect the school (environment).

Style? It does not matter. I've seen horrible teaching at a popular style and I have seen splendid teaching from a "often-laughed-at" style.
Reply:In my opinion, the teacher/instructor is the most important factor. You will spend a lot of time, money, and energy on this journey, and the instructor will make all the difference.

Some things to consider would be, who will be providing the bulk of the instruction? If you do not feel comfortable, supported, welcomed, safe, and encouraged - no matter what the art, how fantastic the training facility, how inexpensive the program, or the fame of the instructor - you will not enjoy your time and you will most likely quit. Your first quest therefore should be to find an environment that actually appeals to you and one in which you feel comfortable.

Everyone will approach this differently, and you must make up your own mind as to what is comfortable and what is not. I'drecommend attending a few different classes to observe the student, instructor, and visitor interactions. If they are positive, respectful, light when appropriate and more serious or studious when called for it's probably a good environment to consider for your martial arts training.

This is probably the single most important decision you will make, as the primary instructor will be your leader, mentor, guide, and confidant. You must be able to trust and respect this individual, and equally feel that they trust and respect you as an individual.

Style is less important than substance

Unless you already know which art you wish to study and are determined to seek only that style out, the style of the instructor you like is far less important than the substance of the instruction. While there are nuances to the method, use, execution, and physical requirements of all the different styles - all will ultimately teach you much about yourself, about your abilities, and about how to defend yourself if the worst should happen.

The substantive advantage therefore is in the knowledge of the instructors who will provide your guidance on a regular basis, and their ability to impart that knowledge is a safe, fun, enjoyable, and accessible manner. Instructors should be able to converse intelligently on the techniques and requirements of the instruction and class elements, and should be able to answer student questions competently, thoroughly, and honestly.

If you find such a school, with an instructor you respect, and environment you like and feel comfortable in, students you think you could be friends with, and an instructor group that seems professional, approachable, and knowledgeable - then you have overcome the greatest hurdles.

Reply:I think it is a mix of both - as both lead to preferences. The best teacher in the world won't be able to teach everyone their style equally. Likewise, not even the most capable martial artist will be able to learn all styles equally, regardless of the teacher. However, I would lean towards teacher being more important.

For teacher - the biggest quality is "can you learn from them?" If not, it won't matter what style they teach.

For school - the biggest question is "can I learn this art form?" If not, the teacher's ability to teach is irrelevant.
Reply:I hear ya! I don't think the style is important and I've repeated many times on YA that if you just learn something, and learn it well, you will achieve whatever goals you had when you started MA.

I think the teacher is much more important, but even more important than that is your dedication to learn. You can breeze through the training and get ranked, but unless you give it total effort, it won't become "part" of you. This is what it means to be good at what you do in anything...when it's part of you, it flows from you without thinking...its natural and its instinctive. This is where you want to be and this only comes with repetition and commitment to what you are doing. Not just in MA, but in life.
Reply:For me the teacher without a doubt is was makes the school and the system (style work).

You may have great lineage but that does not always mean you can teach well. We are unforunately not all gifted with the proper teaching ettiquette that some of us know naturally or have learned by example. Others are just out for money.

So if you have a serious teacher who is truly dedicated to their art then you will have a great school, but if you have a great looking school with a teacher who does not care then you look good in the place but learn nothing.

For me with out a thought it is the teacher or person that makes it.
Reply:The teacher is definitely the most important. There are principles of combat that every style has to recognize but not all do. (Such as how to handle multiple attackers, how important a good balance base and structure is, or that one needs to adapt in a fight or they will lose.)

However, through study and practice which grants understanding, the teacher can learn these and gain a full understanding of them. Hopefully, that teacher can then pass that principle (or truth) on to their students.

What would I look for in a teacher? Patience, wisdom, and kindness are the few that come to mind. Without any of those things, the students will either end up frustrated and/or demoralized and likely never finish their training.

That's not to discount lineage as the student often takes on attributes of their teacher. By seeing where the teacher gained their understanding, one can catch a small glimpse into the future to see how not only their new teacher will treat them and how skilled their new teacher is but also what they can expect for themselves if they are serious about their training.

What is the most hard core form of martial arts?

a style that you could like in the movies were you can pretty much go up agains anyone or like a few guys and still come out without a scratch

What is the most hard core form of martial arts?
That would most def be Chilean (from Chili) Ankle Fighting Style. They have ankle strikes that pretty much kill everyone they touch. Check it out.
Reply:it doesnt exist, hollywood is god in making those moves
Reply:Wing Chun would come the closest at its highest levels only and in the hands of the truly gifted, in my opinion, but even then you would definitely take some shots against other high level opponents.

you could have many flawless victories, however, just very few among the elite.
Reply:kung fu san soo is pretty brutal..least amount of moves, most amount of damage or worse...
Reply:haha , dude there is no such thing , if you are some one who wants to go toe to toe with some one and come out "without a scratch , then martial arts isnt for you. In real life the most "hardcore" martial arts are tie between old school muay thai , and Brazilian Jujitsu
Reply:if you think about it, ALL martial arts are hardcore. but if you REALLY want THE MOST HARDCORE martial art, its gonna be the SHAOLIN KUNG FU of the shaoling monks of china. i know it sounds stereotypical, but shaolin kung fu is true and is truly hardcore. i mean their like the spartans of china.

their training begins at an early age to condition their body, mind , and spirit.

every year, their training intensifies. if you go to one of their temples you actually see holes in the ground, these holes were formed through centuries of stomping upon by the feet of (get this) children,

but then again, the only way to learn this art, is by becoming a monk yourself.

you now that you have equaled the strength they have have by performing this simple, yet difficult task:

blow off a candle, by punching it, you have to punch it like 5inches away from the flame, and the wind from your fists should be able to completely extinguish the fire.

if you wanted a hardcore martial arts that makes you hardcore in less than a week. then your looking for the wrong thing. heck your looking in the wrong planet!.

because shaolin kung fu takes at the VERY LEAST, 30 years to learn, let alone master it.

hope this helps ^^
Reply:the most hard core martial art in real situation is MUAY THAI. muay thai have proven itself against all the martial arts.bjj is also good but u cant handle more then one opponent and its more defensive then offensive. i have seen muay thai player kicked the *** of 3 back boys badly same time...but ya as u asked in the question tat is there any art with which u can fight against multiple attackers without any scratch then there is no such art.
Reply:Tae Kwon Do. It has more undefeated fighters (in matches against fighters from other styles, including Muay Thai and Brazilian Ju Jitsu) than any other martial art. Anybody who disagrees is only saying so because they got their butt handed to them by a Tae Kwon Do fighter, and probably because they can't do the dynamic and devastating kicks it is famous for.

TKD hands down.

Failing that, a sawed-off 12-guage shot gun.
Reply:No doubt you would not be able to come out with a scratch unless you were fighting 3 year olds but a good matail arts to take is probably kenpo
Reply:None really. With enough timing, luck and excess of power over said opponents, you can deal with a small number at once and get away with it.

The closer they are to your ability the harder it is to even beat two people. And that is only a sure thing if you can sucker punch the first one clean out during the 'talking phase'.

The best bet is kickboxing in my opinion up to three. Sucker punch for the first guy, big kick to push the next guy over, take out the thrird guy punching, and go back to number 2 as he gets up from the kick which did not hurt him just pushed him *** over kettle to give you some time.

Also, nice strong legs for running if the first or second moves do not work :)
Reply:That would be Imperial Transcendental Hollywood Kung Fu.

Its not real, but its fun to watch.
Reply:Kalashnikov Rifle otherwise known as the AK 47
Reply:The most hardcore form of martial arts isn't any style, it is you mind. Read up the book of five rings to understand that a man can overcome one or many if he has the right strategy.

If you just want to prove that you are a tough guy, you are not using your most formidable weapon - your brain. Watch less TV, read more...
Reply:Alot of styles will give you a better edge in coming out, damaged as per your natural ability to use what you have learnt. San Soo has tech's that can be used by an unskilled opponent in a short time. But as in all things, there is no perfect anything. It is the imperfection that created MMA. This is the wisdom that nothing is sure.

So as Thai Boxing, BJJ , Sport Karate, San Shao, Judo, Savate, Krav Maga and so many more have shown over and over again. They all kick a.. and are needed in a sound arsenal of a good martial artist. So go find great teachers if you can, be only prejudiced against an dishonorable group, or as others call it

McDojo's. Alot are in it for purely money, with no good return. Alot are in it for an income and a lifestyle, so Go Support Em.
Reply:I'd say Uechi-ryu is one of the most hardcore styles I've seen, but it wouldn't make for good movies.

What is the name of this martial arts kick...?

The person is on one leg, while the other is high in the air, usually 180 degrees from the other leg...is this makes any sense at all lol. In movies or whatever, they usually plant the kick in the opponents chin, which then sends the person hit into the air a bit with an arch on their back...

What is the name of this martial arts kick...?
i think its a simple front kick
Reply:That would be the "Chuck Norris".
Reply:It sounds like a side kick which can be placed anywhere on your opponents body, knee , belly or the head.
Reply:its either called a jumping front kick or a right/left leg bending stance type A (i know this because i do taekwondo a martial art)
Reply:sorry; not enough details! There is more than one kick than can go high in the air; including roundhouse; reverse roundhouse; spinning round house ( which I think is one that Chuck Norris uses a lot)side thrust kick. It depends on where you are compared to the opponent.
Reply:The only kick, I believe, possible of going up 180 degrees is the Side kick. Its possible because you can even go more than 180 degress. I saw it on Discovery Channel that day. It was a program called "Go Warrior". They featured a korean taekwondo grandmaster who could kick out a 180 degrees side kick. But it wouldn't be a side kick because its being kick straight up. Not very practical actually. Theres no other kick that can go up 180 degrees other than the side kick I think. This kick is mainly used for demo purposes and I have never seen anyone using it in practical.

What from of martial arts focuses more on.... acrobatic like moves?

have u seen those movies where there is like a hooded figure on a rooftop (say an assassian) jumping from rooftop to rooftop. thats what i meann by acrobatic

What from of martial arts focuses more on.... acrobatic like moves?
Aikido is not focused on striking, kicking, punching, but more on using energy of your opponent to gain control. Motion and dynamics of movement are emphasized. Control of one’s Ki…Energy and Spirit. The styles of Akido are numerous and many are considered as non competitive art, but they are very effective at rendering an opponent helpless

Maybe this is acrobatic enough...
Reply:That Brazilian martial dance. Its all about acrobatic movement.
Reply:Its chinese kung-fu. Acrobatic moves are parts of their routine or style to have an unlimited moves and be more flexible.
Reply:What you don't see in the movie is the wire that holds the actor up from falling on his face and the 15 takes they do to make it look good..if your looking for a "pretty" style of martial arts, though not very effective in the streets, try Tai Kwan Do....God knows there are enough of those studios around.
Reply:All of that is Hollywood style acrobatics and tricks. But if your underlying question is about finding acrobatic martial arts that involve areal techniques, jumping, kicking etc. then consider these...

TKD, Choy Lay Fut, Muay Thai, Capoeira and of course Wushu.

All have different levels of effectiveness so you need to study each one, but if you want acrobatic you can't go wrong with any of the arts listed.

What you want beyond acrobatics is up to you and your next quest/answer you should seek.

Hope I've helped.

Reply:kool you like the same thing as me i would suggest starting with either taekwondo or wushu then once your studying the martial art you may want to read up and watch a thing called XMA (extreme martial arts) its not and actual martial art but it has all the acrobatic stuff you could want put it in youtube or search Steve terada he is my idol for XMA and he is awesome both TKD and wushu are good one has 540 kicks one has b-twists but you'll learn both those tricks in both of the martial arts so i hope this helps
