Can anyone recommend a good foreign movie?

Preferably subtitled instead of dubbed if it wasn't filmed in English.

Here are some I've tried and liked:

Im Juli

Run Lola Run

a lot of martial arts movies

Grave of the Fireflies

Snatch

I'm open to any genre except sappy romance. Like, some romance is okay as long as there are other elements to it.

That's just a few in case it helps.

Can anyone recommend a good foreign movie?
I like "Amelie," which isn't really a romance, but does have a romance element in it.

You should also check out the Japanese version of "Shall We Dance?" which provides a context for the storyline through the Japanese culture, and is hilariously funny as a result - way better than the stoopid Hollywood remake.

"Like Water for Chocolate" is another brilliant foreign film. An element of Romance, but definitely tasteful and in the realm of Art House - not sappy romance!

"Red Sorghum" has some of the most amazing cinematography I've ever seen.

"Yellow Earth" is another one I'll never forget.
Reply:Well, i like the Inuyasha movie(there's 3 of them), Cowboy Bebop the movie is good too. i hope this helps, i will add more when i think of it. good luck and god bless

Reply:One of the best ones I've seen in years is called "Amelie"....French movie, subtitled in English too. Here's a review of it at the link below. Enjoy.
Reply:"Life is Beautiful" (Italian) was good.

"No Man's Land" was outstanding! A Serb and a Croat are trapped together in a trench after a battle. The UN is involved, etc. It is really good! Filmed in Serbo-Croatian w/subtitles.

"Downfall" (German) was also outstanding about the last days of Hitler in his bunker. Filmed in German w/subtitles.

"Nobody Knows" (Japan) 3 young kids are effectively abandoned by their mother. Filmed in Japanese w/ subtitles.
Reply:Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, and Whispers of the Heart are all Miyazaki Hayo/Studio Ghibli anime films. He is considered the Disney of Japan. Ironically enough, Disney bought his work for US release. However depending on your tastes, you may wish to try:

B13 - Action martial/arts. French, with perhaps one of the best displays of Parkour (Free Running) known to date in film.

Wasabi - Action. Also French, starring Jean Reneau as a French cop who travels to Japan to take custody of a daughter he never knew he had until her mother died. A woman who mysteriously left him 17 years ago, and he has been unable to forget. Soon, however, he realizes that her death was no accident, and he wants justice. For both himself, and his daughter.
Reply:The Curse of the Golden Flower . . . its in chinese
Reply:Try:

"Like watter to chocolate" a beautiful love story, erotism, and magic realism.

"Y tú mamá también" A good art film for young people

"Pan's Laberynith" The 7th mexican movie to be nominated to the Oscar and winner for best art direction and makeup
Reply:anything from wong kar-wai... chungking express or fallen angels are a good one to start with. 2046 as well.
Reply:City of God - One of the best movies of all time, in my opinion. It can be hard to watch at times because some may consider it 'disturbing'.
Reply:Ran (Japanese), Cinema Paradiso (Italian), Seven Samurai (Japanese), Life is Beautiful (Italian), The Last Emperor (Chinese background, but most of it is in English), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Chinese), Belle de Jour (French), Pan's Labrynth (Spanish), Europa Europa (I'm not sure where), Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese), Ringu (Japanese), Audition (Japanese), Brazil (British), The Italian Job (British, I think), Leon (French), City of God (Brazil), Rome, Open City (Italian), Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese, even though it was made for America), Tora! Tora! Tora! (half is Japanese, half is English), Das Boot (German), Oldboy (Korean), The Killing Fields (British, I hear), and Come and See (Russian). There is soo much more. Knock yourself out!
Reply:The Lives of Others (Germany)

The Best of Youth (Italy)

Cinema Paradiso (Italy)

The City of Lost Children (France)

Grand Illusion (France)

The Motorcycle Diaries (Brazil)

Y Tu Mama Tambien (Mexico)

Amores Perros (Mexico)
